TRANSCRIPT:

[00:00:00] Daryl Cagle: Hi, I'm Daryl Cagle, and this is the Caglecast where we're all about editorial cartoons. Chris Wyant is one of the most popular cartoonists we syndicate. He draws for the Boston Globe and the New Yorker. He does children's books. He was a Harvard Nieman Fellow, and he's won a bunch of awards.

[00:00:16] Daryl Cagle: Joe Heller was the editorial cartoonist for the Green Bay, Wisconsin Press Gazette for 28 years. He does children's books and most impressive to me, Joe's editorial cartoons are self syndicated to hundreds of newspapers all by himself, a feat that no other cartoonist that I know has achieved. Ed Wexler is a Emmy nominated creative director at Disney for 30 years.

[00:00:39] Daryl Cagle: He was a regular cartoonist for U. S. News World Report, and he drew the star studded caricature covers for the Hollywood Reporter's Emmy and Academy Awards. Academy Awards issues for many years. And Monty

[00:00:52] Daryl Cagle: Wolverton draws wonderful, quirky, liberal

[00:00:53] Daryl Cagle: cartoons that we syndicate everywhere. Monty is doing a crowdfunding campaign now at Cagle.com/Wolverton. So please take a look. It's tough to make a living in editorial cartoons these days as newspapers are fading away. So. The support of fans can make all the difference in keeping artists like Monty drawing and you can make a difference. Please visit Cagle.com/Wolverton. So welcome, gentlemen.

[00:01:16] Daryl Cagle: great to have you all here. Thanks.

[00:01:18] Chris Weyant: Thank you.

[00:01:18] Daryl Cagle: Good to be here. We're going to flip through a bunch of cartoons and chime in with all your thoughts.

[00:01:24] Daryl Cagle: this one is from Chris. You got the

[00:01:27] Daryl Cagle: elephant sitting in the

[00:01:29] Daryl Cagle: big Venus fly trap of extremism. It's been watered by

[00:01:33] Daryl Cagle: Trump and uh, elephant says

[00:01:35] Daryl Cagle: What's the big deal?

[00:01:36] Daryl Cagle: I have it right here where I want it. That's an excellent cartoon.

[00:01:39] Monte Wolverton: I like it. I like the, I like the pendant figure of Trump. I guess we would call that in art history or something. Little tiny Trump.

[00:01:47] Chris Weyant: Tiny Trump, the way we like him. Yeah.

[00:01:50] Ed Wexler: Little tiny head.

[00:01:52] Daryl Cagle: Good scary cartoon. Here's another Chris Weyant cartoon, two panels, first panel, what Republican leaders consider to be a threat to our schools, the CRT and, LGTBQ

[00:02:05] Chris Weyant: and gender tourism

[00:02:06] Daryl Cagle: what they don't consider to be a threat is, gun violence and mass killings in schools. And that's just a good, contrast.

[00:02:14] Monte Wolverton: We can't have enough of that message.

[00:02:17] Monte Wolverton: I think.

[00:02:17] Chris Weyant: Yeah, I agree.

[00:02:18] Monte Wolverton: I need to keep saying that over and over and over again.

[00:02:21] Daryl Cagle: Well, what's frustrating is that cartoons like this that we think are most important are often the least reprinted.

[00:02:29] Monte Wolverton: Oh, they're dangerous. Dangerous.

[00:02:32] Chris Weyant: They do well online. This one did pretty well. It did.

[00:02:35] Daryl Cagle: Boy, you know, online is so entirely different than newspaper editors.

[00:02:40] Ed Wexler: I find that too. Yeah.

[00:02:41] Joe Heller: Yeah. Exactly. They will hopefully catch up at one point because the online will become the newspaper editors. I think we have a generation shift. That'll eventually come. Whether there'll be a newspaper or not, I don't know, but

[00:02:52] Daryl Cagle: yeah, yeah We still have newspapers I should add that You know, this is an audio as well as a video podcast and so I read and describe the cartoons for those people who do not get to see the images, but if you don't see the images, please join us on, Caglecast.com or Cagle.Com or Apple Podcasts or Spotify or YouTube and you can see all of the cartoons as we discuss them. And here we have Chris Wyant with, a woke, black guy listening to a racist, transphobic, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, bigoted, anti Semitic, MAGA guy who says, Why would you wear something so hateful?

[00:03:30] Daryl Cagle: Oh, it's those shirts that describe them.

[00:03:33] Ed Wexler: Great cartoon.

[00:03:34] Joe Heller: That is a great cartoon. I like the simplicity of, of the woke. This nice lowercase. Yeah. On a white shirt. It's

[00:03:41] Chris Weyant: a nice font, right? It's funny, I like cartoons. Feel like, yeah, I like the font. Me too. It's like,

[00:03:45] Chris Weyant: oh, I don't usually write so well. Oh man.

[00:03:46] Ed Wexler: All, all the fonts on the shirt too are, it works great.

[00:03:50] Ed Wexler: It's decorative and funny and. That's the point.

[00:03:53] Monte Wolverton: How well did it do as far as, uh, newspaper?

[00:03:55] Chris Weyant: I don't know. How did this do?

[00:03:57] Daryl Cagle: I tend to give you the stats and look at the ones that perform well. And then I often send emails to cartoonists to show them which cartoons they did that nobody printed.

[00:04:08] Daryl Cagle: And all the ones in between, I don't

[00:04:11] Daryl Cagle: really look at. So Okay. So. I don't know what to tell you, but, uh...

[00:04:16] Chris Weyant: Yeah, I think I was, I think I was

[00:04:17] Chris Weyant: a middle lister on, on, on this one. Okay. So, okay.

[00:04:21] Chris Weyant: Not totally buried. You know, anything, anything with a,

[00:04:23] Daryl Cagle: MAGA hat where, where one side describes the other, the editors tend to, shy away.

[00:04:29] Daryl Cagle: they like, they like funny little jokes that, don't express an opinion.

[00:04:34] Joe Heller: Unfortunately true.

[00:04:35] Daryl Cagle: And that is to our great frustration.

[00:04:38] Chris Weyant: both are represented here. Yeah. at least visually. Okay. Here you

[00:04:41] Daryl Cagle: got an elephant holding, abortion ban bills in his hand and he says,

[00:04:45] Daryl Cagle: I absolutely support a woman's right to choose to not live in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Florida, Wyoming, Kentucky.

[00:04:56] Chris Weyant: That is an outdated list already. I need to expand it. . Very nice.

[00:05:01] Daryl Cagle: Oh boy. Yeah, it's half the states. It's terrible.

[00:05:04] Daryl Cagle: this is an oldie of yours, but I just

[00:05:06] Daryl Cagle: thought it looks so nice and I liked your

[00:05:08] Daryl Cagle: texture and, there's such a wonderful tradition of broken down old cars in editorial cartoons that, everybody loves to draw. So you've got the mechanic in his garage, which is a big mess. And he's made a big mess of Uncle Sam's democracy car and the elephant.

[00:05:26] Daryl Cagle: Mechanic says try it now when it has no motor in it, I I think this is just a lovely looking cartoon.

[00:05:32] Ed Wexler: It's a nice cartoon,

[00:05:33] Ed Wexler: right? Yeah,

[00:05:35] Chris Weyant: it's fun to draw an engine block

[00:05:37] Daryl Cagle: Okay gentlemen

[00:05:38] Chris Weyant: now we're up to joe We're up to joe heller. joe

[00:05:43] Daryl Cagle: You've got

[00:05:43] Chris Weyant: the, the Fox News Fox and the Dominion lawsuit, but, uh, the Dominion lawsuit is, Shears and you cut off

[00:05:50] Daryl Cagle: all his hair and underneath we see that he's a rat I think that's funny.

[00:05:55] Chris Weyant: Yeah. Yeah. That's great. That's a great image.

[00:05:57] Monte Wolverton: That's brilliant. It's just, you had to think

[00:05:59] Joe Heller: to come up with that. I thought, you know, what, it's just one of those things that came to you, so many of us draw the Fox News as a fox, you know, and I thought, you know, they're going to get sheared, and from there, it just went on to what, you know, once you get sheared, you look like a rat, you know, you're not a real fox, and you're not...

[00:06:17] Daryl Cagle: Another thing that I find frustrating about editors is that they avoid cartoons that make comments on other media. Have you noticed that?

[00:06:25] Chris Weyant: Are you seeing

[00:06:26] Chris Weyant: that change at all? Because the media is reporting on itself a little bit differently

[00:06:30] Chris Weyant: now.

[00:06:31] Daryl Cagle: They love to report on themselves. They're self focused. But, uh, when it comes to criticizing...

[00:06:37] Daryl Cagle: Another outlet, they are shy from that.

[00:06:40] Chris Weyant: Well this does it well..

[00:06:42] Daryl Cagle: And this is a lovely, Republican bashing cartoon. You've got, Michelangelo's statue of David holding an AK 47 covering his private parts. just the way that Republicans would like to see David.

[00:06:56] Joe Heller: Yeah. Yeah. Nothing objective. Yes.

[00:06:59] Daryl Cagle: Uh, Somehow I don't think that... I was very...

[00:07:02] Joe Heller: I was very generous with him, giving that, uh, higher capacity, uh, cartridge there. Covering up his, uh,

[00:07:09] Joe Heller: his ....

[00:07:10] Daryl Cagle: Yes, it's a very flattering AK 47

[00:07:13] Chris Weyant: it. Yeah. Yeah. Well, well placed munitions.

[00:07:16] Chris Weyant: All right, here you got a six panel cartoon,

[00:07:18] Daryl Cagle: with The white guy talking to the black lady, who is a teacher. And the white guy is holding a banned list and he says, Hey

[00:07:28] Daryl Cagle: teacher, we don't trust you with these books.

[00:07:31] Daryl Cagle: He's holding a history book and says, We

[00:07:33] Daryl Cagle: don't trust you with

[00:07:34] Daryl Cagle: history. He holds approved pronouns and

[00:07:37] Daryl Cagle: says, We don't trust

[00:07:38] Daryl Cagle: you with grammar.

[00:07:40] Daryl Cagle: He's holding a rainbow and says, we don't trust you with rainbows. He's holding a picture of statue of David

[00:07:48] Daryl Cagle: with an X on it. He says, we don't trust you with art, but I do

[00:07:52] Daryl Cagle: trust you with this as he holds the gun. excellent cartoon.

[00:07:56] Chris Weyant: Yeah, that's great. Yeah. Nice turn. Yeah,

[00:07:59] Joe Heller: a little wordy for me, but,

[00:08:00] Daryl Cagle: Okay, here's, you got the

[00:08:02] Chris Weyant: judge

[00:08:03] Daryl Cagle: with the abortion pill rulings.

[00:08:04] Daryl Cagle: And he says,

[00:08:05] Daryl Cagle: as a federal judge, I identify as your pharmacist.

[00:08:09] Chris Weyant: Joe, Joe, the voices that you wrote it with very Brooklyn, almost like Bed-Stuy.

[00:08:16] Joe Heller: Yeah. I think you should do

[00:08:17] Chris Weyant: Texas. Okay,

[00:08:19] Daryl Cagle: and here's your Mickey Mouse Club cartoon, Joe, with, angry but happy looking, uh, well, sinister looking Disney characters, say, Disney sues Florida Governor DeSantis.

[00:08:29] Daryl Cagle: why the sinister look?

[00:08:31] Joe Heller: like they're gonna go after.

[00:08:33] Ed Wexler: Yeah,

[00:08:35] Ed Wexler: they're gonna get back at him.

[00:08:36] Joe Heller: They're gonna

[00:08:36] Chris Weyant: crush him. Yeah.

[00:08:37] Daryl Cagle: They're just, confidently, angry eyeballs with big smiles. Yeah. Like,

[00:08:43] Joe Heller: just wait for it kind of thing. You're gonna get your comeuppance. Yeah.

[00:08:48] Monte Wolverton: It's a wrong fight.

[00:08:49] Daryl Cagle: All right, Joe, so here you got a guy

[00:08:51] Daryl Cagle: putting in all kinds of yard signs that say, I still support

[00:08:54] Daryl Cagle: Trump and you got a couple walking by and fella says he's going to run out of yard before Trump runs out of scandals.

[00:09:01] Daryl Cagle: You've got, uh, uh, people driving away in their car with the license plate. This is first state to ban Tik TOK, help Montana. And, uh, the kids in the back seat

[00:09:11] Daryl Cagle: say, mom, I'm so bored.

[00:09:14] Daryl Cagle: Yeah, me too. I'm really bored. There's nothing to do.

[00:09:17] Daryl Cagle: Excellent cartoon.

[00:09:19] Joe Heller: I like your voices. This cartoon must have done really well, right? Is that a Montana voice? I, you know, I got a few papers in Montana, some of the bigger ones, and they... We're wishy washy about that for some reason. I don't know. I don't know why, but it doesn't go through the summer.

[00:09:35] Joe Heller: This will be a popular

[00:09:37] Monte Wolverton: wishy washy out of their wishy washiness manifest itself.

[00:09:40] Joe Heller: Well, it's just like I got a couple that said, uh, this is funny, but I'm not going to run it. Uh, that kind of stuff. And I think they're more, like you said, they're more braver online. A couple of them said, I'm not going to print it, but I'm put it online.

[00:09:52] Joe Heller: You know, it's. I don't know if you've got a spine, a bigger spine, with your online entity or publication.

[00:10:00] Chris Weyant: You know, maybe it was just that they anticipated it

[00:10:03] Daryl Cagle: would generate a bunch of mail. Rather than making people angry, just didn't want to deal with mail.

[00:10:09] Chris Weyant: Mail's a good thing. That means that people are reading Yeah, free monitoring,

[00:10:14] Joe Heller: but I liked it

[00:10:16] Daryl Cagle: Ed,

[00:10:16] Daryl Cagle: we're up to you. You've got your crazy republican Matt Gates And he's with his little Underage, uh sex partner, and he says she's 21. And what's so funny about this is her face is pixelated out. I think that's hilarious.

[00:10:31] Chris Weyant: Yeah, that's a great touch. It's really...

[00:10:34] Monte Wolverton: It's just an excellent .

[00:10:35] Joe Heller: It's a nice touch, yeah.

[00:10:36] Monte Wolverton: Really is good.

[00:10:38] Ed Wexler: Thank you. She's got the little, uh, brightly colored lollipop, and the school books, and pigtails, and she's 21.

[00:10:46] Daryl Cagle: It's fascinating how, tolerant the Republicans are of this stuff.

[00:10:51] Ed Wexler: Uh, yeah. I don't know. Why do you think? Why does he get away with this?

[00:10:55] Monte Wolverton: Well, maybe she's not planning on having an abortion.

[00:10:58] Monte Wolverton: So it's okay.

[00:10:59] Chris Weyant: Right.

[00:10:59] Daryl Cagle: Anyway, that's a beautiful drawing. You're a very funny caricature.

[00:11:03] Chris Weyant: It's got a big square head.

[00:11:04] Daryl Cagle: here you got, three MAGA elephant ladies counting the votes in Arizona. And the first one says,

[00:11:11] Chris Weyant: we'll just keep recounting votes.

[00:11:13] Daryl Cagle: And the third one

[00:11:14] Chris Weyant: says, until it comes

[00:11:16] Ed Wexler: out, right.

[00:11:17] Chris Weyant: that's a very true cartoon.

[00:11:19] Chris Weyant: All you have to do is draw truth.

[00:11:21] Ed Wexler: Yeah, I, I, I liked, for a while there, I liked, uh, depicting, MAGA ladies as, uh, blonde elephants.

[00:11:27] Chris Weyant: You get the haircuts really right.

[00:11:30] Daryl Cagle: Oh, and I thought this was very funny. You've got, uh, DeSantis Tinkerbell flying over the rainbow singing, uh, Bibbidi Bobbidi LGTBQ.

[00:11:39] Joe Heller: Great caricature.

[00:11:44] Ed Wexler: I'm still struggling trying to get a handle on uh, on drawing DeSantis.

[00:11:48] Daryl Cagle: Oh, wonderful DeSantis. I think you've got the handle.

[00:11:53] Ed Wexler: He's got like a bulby nose, but he doesn't have a big nose, you know?

[00:11:57] Daryl Cagle: The DeSantis logo is funny. Drawn like Disney. a hilarious cartoon.

[00:12:02] Ed Wexler: Thanks, guys.

[00:12:04] Daryl Cagle: And here you've got the, elephant, painting himself into the... corner painting out his law and order, but, wanting to defund the FBI in his black defund the FBI paint. He says, we're the law and

[00:12:18] Daryl Cagle: order party, except when it comes to Trump.

[00:12:22] Ed Wexler: You know, that actually could have been Trump and not an elephant. But I thought it, I thought the cartoon would be printed in more publications if it was an elephant.

[00:12:32] Monte Wolverton: Yeah.

[00:12:32] Daryl Cagle: It's true. You draw Trump and it just doesn't get printed. And

[00:12:35] Ed Wexler: this is all about deflecting, away from Trump and his crimes.

[00:12:38] Chris Weyant: Right.

[00:12:39] Ed Wexler: All of his stuff.

[00:12:41] Daryl Cagle: Lovely cartoon. And here you have the Republican, couple sitting on the couch and, the wife and their ashtrays are full and smoking and they're both smoking. The wife, has her curlers and she's funny as can be. And she says,

[00:12:57] Daryl Cagle: So he's a staunch anti abortion candidate who's paid for his

[00:13:01] Daryl Cagle: girlfriend's abortions and denies four of his kids.

[00:13:06] Daryl Cagle: And the husband says, Nobody's perfect.

[00:13:10] Ed Wexler: That, that was, during the time of, uh, Herschel Walker. And, you know, the Republicans blind, defense. Of everything about him with, all the abortions that he's paid for and all the hypocrisy, all the Hershel Walker

[00:13:21] Chris Weyant: hypocrisy.

[00:13:22] Chris Weyant: That's

[00:13:22] Chris Weyant: their, ongoing theme of

[00:13:24] Daryl Cagle: not caring about

[00:13:25] Chris Weyant: any moral turpitude.

[00:13:27] Daryl Cagle: Oh, and here's another beautiful DeSantis cartoon. you have Mickey's arm. All you need is Mickey's arm. And, he's, swishing around the dictator detector and it's beep, beep, beeping off of him like a metal detector.

[00:13:41] Ed Wexler: I try to, capture DeSantis', Athletic physique.

[00:13:51] Chris Weyant: His five o'clock shadow

[00:13:52] Daryl Cagle: and his upper lip, I think, are just very funny.

[00:13:55] Chris Weyant: Yeah, he's completely sculptural as a human being.

[00:13:59] Ed Wexler: He's sculptural.

[00:14:00] Daryl Cagle: Ed, this is a lovely cartoon. You've got Trump with his tiny hands in handcuffs. This is the day that he was, brought in for his arraignment. lovely, simple, very cute cartoon.

[00:14:11] Monte Wolverton: That's great. It's one of those you look at and you think, why didn't I think of that? It's so, but nobody else has done that.

[00:14:17] Ed Wexler: Nice when that happens every, every now and again.

[00:14:19] Daryl Cagle: Well, lovely cartoon, Ed.

[00:14:21] Ed Wexler: Well, thank you.

[00:14:22] Daryl Cagle: Ed, this is a lovely cartoon. You've got the three conservative justices, carrying the, the coffin of ethics with Ginny Thomas on the top wearing her QAnon crazy hat with a big smile. Wonderful caricatures.

[00:14:38] Chris Weyant: Yeah, the

[00:14:38] Chris Weyant: Ginny Thomas is perfect.

[00:14:40] Monte Wolverton: Perfect Ginny, yeah.

[00:14:41] Chris Weyant: It's so

[00:14:42] Monte Wolverton: funny. I

[00:14:42] Ed Wexler: must say I enjoyed drawing that Ginny Thomas. Clearly.

[00:14:45] Monte Wolverton: Yeah.

[00:14:46] Chris Weyant: He comes through.

[00:14:48] Daryl Cagle: You know, we did a podcast, uh, with the theme of Clarence Thomas. That was our most popular one so far.

[00:14:55] Chris Weyant: That's quite good. And Chris, you popped up here where I didn't expect

[00:14:59] Daryl Cagle: you to be.

[00:15:00] Chris Weyant: So we got, the Democrat donkey and the Republican elephant,

[00:15:04] Daryl Cagle: they're each holding signs and the donkey has a sign that says, are you better off today than you were 40 years ago? And the Republican has, are you better off today than you were four years ago? that makes a good point for, one of our recent elections, I don't recall which are 2012.

[00:15:19] Daryl Cagle: 12. Ha, ha, ha. I'll edit this one

[00:15:20] Chris Weyant: out if you want. But I think it's great! Excellent cartoon. Still good 11 years later. It's a funny drawing. It's great.

[00:15:29] Daryl Cagle: Here's another one that I thought I took out. Um,

[00:15:36] Chris Weyant: The elephant and the donkey each chained

[00:15:38] Daryl Cagle: together with entitlements when their axe is about to whack either the chain or their own hands off. Each saying, you first. That's an excellent graphic. I like this one. That one's probably 12 years old, too.

[00:15:52] Chris Weyant: Yeah, I think you're old.

[00:15:53] Daryl Cagle: I put in a few of mine. Um, We've got, uh, Donkey and the Elephant chasing after money, and, uh, You know, the pig represents business and greed, and he's sitting in a rickshaw getting pulled by the Donkey and the Elephant.

[00:16:08] Daryl Cagle: Here's, uh, Trump and his spineless Republicans as he pulls out their spine. Uh, here's, uh, GOP

[00:16:18] Chris Weyant: Guernica. Don't, don't go so fast. Yeah, go ahead.

[00:16:21] Daryl Cagle: I'm just going through my own faster. They, uh, you know, I've seen a whole lot of cartoonists do a whole lot of Guernica cartoons, and they're always good and they're always popular, and editors just seem to love art masterpiece metaphors in cartoons.

[00:16:36] Chris Weyant: Did you draw this to scale like the Real Guernica?

[00:16:38] Daryl Cagle: Oh yeah, it fills my house.

[00:16:42] Daryl Cagle: Uh, here's

[00:16:44] Daryl Cagle: a Republican inviting the folks into the house to vote where they just fall off a cliff.

[00:16:53] Ed Wexler: That's a very good one.

[00:16:54] Daryl Cagle: It's a strategy.

[00:16:55] Monte Wolverton: Oh, you did, you did it vertical. Vertical format, which is unusual.

[00:17:00] Chris Weyant: vertical format gets

[00:17:01] Daryl Cagle: printed less, but sometimes you want to do

[00:17:03] Chris Weyant: it anyway.

[00:17:04] Chris Weyant: Yeah.

[00:17:05] Daryl Cagle: Okay, here's a math cartoon. Elementary school math. The gun plus the Republicans in love with the NRA equals all the dead people in the graveyard. Another cartoon I'm sure didn't get pretty much.

[00:17:18] Ed Wexler: That's a nice

[00:17:19] Ed Wexler: caricature.

[00:17:20] Chris Weyant: It is.

[00:17:21] Daryl Cagle: And here's the Republican elephant all tied up in a knot. Which seems to be their natural position.

[00:17:26] Daryl Cagle: Okay, we're up to you,

[00:17:27] Daryl Cagle: Monty.

[00:17:28] Monte Wolverton: Well, there it is. This, this goes back a ways, doesn't it?

[00:17:32] Daryl Cagle: Uh, yeah. So we got a couple, Elephants talk to each other, stacks of paper, and one of them says, I love the smell of election audits in the morning. They do love, they do love to audit when they don't win. defunding public education, Elephants says to the others.

[00:17:48] Daryl Cagle: And when our plan is complete, only the wealthy will be able to afford education. Finally, the

[00:17:53] Daryl Cagle: riffraff will be under our control.

[00:17:55] Daryl Cagle:

[00:17:55] Daryl Cagle: Oh, the GOP, and science. Science says

[00:17:58] Chris Weyant: good news. We're adding years to your lifespan.

[00:18:01] Daryl Cagle: And the GOP says good news. We're saving money

[00:18:05] Chris Weyant: by cutting Medicare and social security,

[00:18:07] Daryl Cagle: thereby taking years from your lifespan.

[00:18:09] Monte Wolverton: For some reason, my GOP guy, who looks like a generalized GOP guy in Congress or something, turned out looking like, Data.

[00:18:18] Joe Heller: A little. There is a little data in there. A little Brent Spiner.

[00:18:23] Monte Wolverton: Yeah, Brent Spiner, yeah. I don't know why, I just noticed that afterwards. It would be much kinder, I think.

[00:18:29] Chris Weyant: I noticed

[00:18:29] Daryl Cagle: also you Republicans tend to have weak chins.

[00:18:32] Monte Wolverton: Yeah, they do. Well, like DeSantis, look at DeSantis. Okay. Or at least Wexler's DeSantis.

[00:18:37] Ed Wexler: He's got much, he's not got much chin.

[00:18:39] Ed Wexler: Alright, so here your Republican says, And we won't stop until every American man, woman, and child is equipped with their very own

[00:18:46] Daryl Cagle: AR 15. White, straight Republicans, that is.

[00:18:50] Monte Wolverton: Yeah, you can't trust the other people. Can't trust the other people with AR 15s. We'll give them squirt guns.

[00:18:56] Chris Weyant: Here's

[00:18:56] Daryl Cagle: your DeSantis, Monty. Uh, dressed like he's, a king knight from the Middle Ages. And he says, At

[00:19:03] Daryl Cagle: last, my reversion of Florida to the Dark Ages is

[00:19:07] Daryl Cagle: complete. And now for the rest of the country. And behind him they're saying, Bring out your dead.

[00:19:13] Chris Weyant: Yeah, a

[00:19:13] Monte Wolverton: little, Monty Python reference there, if you recall.

[00:19:17] Daryl Cagle: And here you've got the elephant in the nest with, Elon Musk. I guess they're in bed together. Twits of a feather. Elon says, make yourself at home. The twitter nests.

[00:19:28] Monte Wolverton: This is, actually the week after he screwed up the, the big release of the DeSantis campaign, and yet he is, he's GOP friendly.

[00:19:37] Monte Wolverton: it's increasingly becoming the haunt of

[00:19:40] Chris Weyant: GOP. Yeah,

[00:19:40] Joe Heller: you captured his, like, his creepiness.

[00:19:42] Ed Wexler: can totally tell it's him.

[00:19:44] Monte Wolverton: He's creepy. Well, and there's the, there's the trademark there, and he hasn't said anything about it to me so far.

[00:19:51] Ed Wexler: You wonder if they see him, you know,

[00:19:52] Chris Weyant: does the elephant have a

[00:19:53] Chris Weyant: belly button?

[00:19:54] Daryl Cagle: He has quite an interesting belly button. It's

[00:19:57] Monte Wolverton: either a belly button or a, or a spider.

[00:20:00] Chris Weyant: I like it.

[00:20:00] Daryl Cagle: Okay, gentlemen, we've gotten through our, 35 cartoons and they were an excellent 35 cartoons.

[00:20:07] Daryl Cagle: So you guys have any more comments on Crazy Republicans?

[00:20:10] Chris Weyant: What's to say? They're crazy.

[00:20:11] Joe Heller: It's like shooting fish in a barrel once in a while.

[00:20:13] Daryl Cagle: I guess it is.

[00:20:15] Monte Wolverton: Well, my next one will have bloods and guns in it, so... It probably won't see much publication, but maybe it will.

[00:20:20] Chris Weyant: I don't know about you guys. I'm more than happy

[00:20:23] Chris Weyant: to draw about independents and democrats if they

[00:20:25] Chris Weyant: just, you know,

[00:20:26] Chris Weyant: if the GOP would stop hogging the attention

[00:20:30] Chris Weyant: with

[00:20:30] Chris Weyant: insanity.

[00:20:30] Chris Weyant: If they just did something else, maybe govern, then I'll be bored.

[00:20:35] Monte Wolverton: It's such an easy target, as it were.

[00:20:37] Joe Heller: Uh, this is, we gotta start watching the right news channels. That way, uh, you know, we can start drawing those fake cartoons.

[00:20:44] Chris Weyant: Right.

[00:20:44] Daryl Cagle: But... You make an excellent point. So, everybody, thank you for,

[00:00:00]Daryl CagleHi, I'm Daryl Cagle, and this is the Caglecast where we're all about editorial cartoons. Chris Wyant is one of the most popular cartoonists we syndicate. He draws for the Boston Globe and the New Yorker. He does children's books. He was a Harvard Nieman Fellow, and he's won a bunch of awards.

[00:00:16]Daryl CagleJoe Heller was the editorial cartoonist for the Green Bay, Wisconsin Press Gazette for 28 years. He does children's books and most impressive to me, Joe's editorial cartoons are self syndicated to hundreds of newspapers all by himself, a feat that no other cartoonist that I know has achieved. Ed Wexler is a Emmy nominated creative director at Disney for 30 years.

[00:00:39]Daryl CagleHe was a regular cartoonist for U. S. News World Report, and he drew the star studded caricature covers for the Hollywood Reporter's Emmy and Academy Awards. Academy Awards issues for many years. And Monty

[00:00:52]Daryl CagleWolverton draws wonderful, quirky, liberal

[00:00:53]Daryl Caglecartoons that we syndicate everywhere.

[00:01:16]Daryl Caglegreat to have you all here. Thanks.

[00:01:18]Chris WeyantThank you.

[00:01:18]Daryl CagleGood to be here. We're going to flip through a bunch of cartoons and chime in with all your thoughts.

[00:01:24]Daryl Caglethis one is from Chris. You got the

[00:01:27]Daryl Cagleelephant sitting in the

[00:01:29]Daryl Caglebig Venus fly trap of extremism. It's been watered by

[00:01:33]Daryl CagleTrump and uh, elephant says

[00:01:35]Daryl CagleWhat's the big deal?

[00:01:36]Daryl CagleI have it right here where I want it. That's an excellent cartoon.

[00:01:39]Monte WolvertonI like it. I like the, I like the pendant figure of Trump. I guess we would call that in art history or something. Little tiny Trump.

[00:01:47]Chris WeyantTiny Trump, the way we like him. Yeah.

[00:01:50]Ed WexlerLittle tiny head.

[00:01:52]Daryl CagleGood scary cartoon. Here's another Chris Weyant cartoon, two panels, first panel, what Republican leaders consider to be a threat to our schools, the CRT and, LGTBQ

[00:02:05]Chris Weyantand gender tourism

[00:02:06]Daryl Caglewhat they don't consider to be a threat is, gun violence and mass killings in schools. And that's just a good, contrast.

[00:02:14]Monte WolvertonWe can't have enough of that message.

[00:02:17]Monte WolvertonI think.

[00:02:17]Chris WeyantYeah, I agree.

[00:02:18]Monte WolvertonI need to keep saying that over and over and over again.

[00:02:21]Daryl CagleWell, what's frustrating is that cartoons like this that we think are most important are often the least reprinted.

[00:02:29]Monte WolvertonOh, they're dangerous. Dangerous.

[00:02:32]Chris WeyantThey do well online. This one did pretty well. It did.

[00:02:35]Daryl CagleBoy, you know, online is so entirely different than newspaper editors.

[00:02:40]Ed WexlerI find that too. Yeah.

[00:02:41]Joe HellerYeah. Exactly. They will hopefully catch up at one point because the online will become the newspaper editors. I think we have a generation shift. That'll eventually come. Whether there'll be a newspaper or not, I don't know, but

[00:02:52]Daryl Cagleyeah, yeah We still have newspapers I should add that You know, this is an audio as well as a video podcast and so I read and describe the cartoons for those people who do not get to see the images, but if you don't see the images, please join us on, Caglecast.com or Cagle.Com or Apple Podcasts or Spotify or YouTube and you can see all of the cartoons as we discuss them. And here we have Chris Wyant with, a woke, black guy listening to a racist, transphobic, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, bigoted, anti Semitic, MAGA guy who says, Why would you wear something so hateful?

[00:03:30]Daryl CagleOh, it's those shirts that describe them.

[00:03:33]Ed WexlerGreat cartoon.

[00:03:34]Joe HellerThat is a great cartoon. I like the simplicity of, of the woke. This nice lowercase. Yeah. On a white shirt. It's

[00:03:41]Chris Weyanta nice font, right? It's funny, I like cartoons. Feel like, yeah, I like the font. Me too. It's like,

[00:03:45]Chris Weyantoh, I don't usually write so well. Oh man.

[00:03:46]Ed WexlerAll, all the fonts on the shirt too are, it works great.

[00:03:50]Ed WexlerIt's decorative and funny and. That's the point.

[00:03:53]Monte WolvertonHow well did it do as far as, uh, newspaper?

[00:03:55]Chris WeyantI don't know. How did this do?

[00:03:57]Daryl CagleI tend to give you the stats and look at the ones that perform well. And then I often send emails to cartoonists to show them which cartoons they did that nobody printed.

[00:04:08]Daryl CagleAnd all the ones in between, I don't

[00:04:11]Daryl Caglereally look at. So Okay. So. I don't know what to tell you, but, uh...

[00:04:16]Chris WeyantYeah, I think I was, I think I was

[00:04:17]Chris Weyanta middle lister on, on, on this one. Okay. So, okay.

[00:04:21]Chris WeyantNot totally buried. You know, anything, anything with a,

[00:04:23]Daryl CagleMAGA hat where, where one side describes the other, the editors tend to, shy away.

[00:04:29]Daryl Caglethey like, they like funny little jokes that, don't express an opinion.

[00:04:34]Joe HellerUnfortunately true.

[00:04:35]Daryl CagleAnd that is to our great frustration.

[00:04:38]Chris Weyantboth are represented here. Yeah. at least visually. Okay. Here you

[00:04:41]Daryl Caglegot an elephant holding, abortion ban bills in his hand and he says,

[00:04:45]Daryl CagleI absolutely support a woman's right to choose to not live in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Florida, Wyoming, Kentucky.

[00:04:56]Chris WeyantThat is an outdated list already. I need to expand it. . Very nice.

[00:05:01]Daryl CagleOh boy. Yeah, it's half the states. It's terrible.

[00:05:04]Daryl Caglethis is an oldie of yours, but I just

[00:05:06]Daryl Caglethought it looks so nice and I liked your

[00:05:08]Daryl Cagletexture and, there's such a wonderful tradition of broken down old cars in editorial cartoons that, everybody loves to draw. So you've got the mechanic in his garage, which is a big mess. And he's made a big mess of Uncle Sam's democracy car and the elephant.

[00:05:26]Daryl CagleMechanic says try it now when it has no motor in it, I I think this is just a lovely looking cartoon.

[00:05:32]Ed WexlerIt's a nice cartoon,

[00:05:33]Ed Wexlerright? Yeah,

[00:05:35]Chris Weyantit's fun to draw an engine block

[00:05:37]Daryl CagleOkay gentlemen

[00:05:38]Chris Weyantnow we're up to joe We're up to joe heller. joe

[00:05:43]Daryl CagleYou've got

[00:05:43]Chris Weyantthe, the Fox News Fox and the Dominion lawsuit, but, uh, the Dominion lawsuit is, Shears and you cut off

[00:05:50]Daryl Cagleall his hair and underneath we see that he's a rat I think that's funny.

[00:05:55]Chris WeyantYeah. Yeah. That's great. That's a great image.

[00:05:57]Monte WolvertonThat's brilliant. It's just, you had to think

[00:05:59]Joe Hellerto come up with that.

[00:06:17]Daryl CagleAnother thing that I find frustrating about editors is that they avoid cartoons that make comments on other media. Have you noticed that?

[00:06:25]Chris WeyantAre you seeing

[00:06:26]Chris Weyantthat change at all? Because the media is reporting on itself a little bit differently

[00:06:30]Chris Weyantnow.

[00:06:31]Daryl CagleThey love to report on themselves. They're self focused. But, uh, when it comes to criticizing...

[00:06:37]Daryl CagleAnother outlet, they are shy from that.

[00:06:40]Chris WeyantWell this does it well..

[00:06:42]Daryl CagleAnd this is a lovely, Republican bashing cartoon. You've got, Michelangelo's statue of David holding an AK 47 covering his private parts. just the way that Republicans would like to see David.

[00:06:56]Joe HellerYeah. Yeah. Nothing objective. Yes.

[00:06:59]Daryl CagleUh, Somehow I don't think that... I was very...

[00:07:02]Joe HellerI was very generous with him, giving that, uh, higher capacity, uh, cartridge there. Covering up his, uh,

[00:07:09]Joe Hellerhis ....

[00:07:10]Daryl CagleYes, it's a very flattering AK 47

[00:07:13]Chris Weyantit. Yeah. Yeah. Well, well placed munitions.

[00:07:16]Chris WeyantAll right, here you got a six panel cartoon,

[00:07:18]Daryl Caglewith The white guy talking to the black lady, who is a teacher. And the white guy is holding a banned list and he says, Hey

[00:07:28]Daryl Cagleteacher, we don't trust you with these books.

[00:07:31]Daryl CagleHe's holding a history book and says, We

[00:07:33]Daryl Cagledon't trust you with

[00:07:34]Daryl Caglehistory. He holds approved pronouns and

[00:07:37]Daryl Caglesays, We don't trust

[00:07:38]Daryl Cagleyou with grammar.

[00:07:40]Daryl CagleHe's holding a rainbow and says, we don't trust you with rainbows. He's holding a picture of statue of David

[00:07:48]Daryl Caglewith an X on it. He says, we don't trust you with art, but I do

[00:07:52]Daryl Cagletrust you with this as he holds the gun. excellent cartoon.

[00:07:56]Chris WeyantYeah, that's great. Yeah. Nice turn. Yeah,

[00:07:59]Joe Hellera little wordy for me, but,

[00:08:00]Daryl CagleOkay, here's, you got the

[00:08:02]Chris Weyantjudge

[00:08:03]Daryl Caglewith the abortion pill rulings.

[00:08:04]Daryl CagleAnd he says,

[00:08:05]Daryl Cagleas a federal judge, I identify as your pharmacist.

[00:08:09]Chris WeyantJoe, Joe, the voices that you wrote it with very Brooklyn, almost like Bed-Stuy.

[00:08:16]Joe HellerYeah. I think you should do

[00:08:17]Chris WeyantTexas. Okay,

[00:08:19]Daryl Cagleand here's your Mickey Mouse Club cartoon, Joe, with, angry but happy looking, uh, well, sinister looking Disney characters, say, Disney sues Florida Governor DeSantis.

[00:08:29]Daryl Caglewhy the sinister look?

[00:08:31]Joe Hellerlike they're gonna go after.

[00:08:33]Ed WexlerYeah,

[00:08:35]Ed Wexlerthey're gonna get back at him.

[00:08:36]Joe HellerThey're gonna

[00:08:36]Chris Weyantcrush him. Yeah.

[00:08:37]Daryl CagleThey're just, confidently, angry eyeballs with big smiles. Yeah. Like,

[00:08:43]Joe Hellerjust wait for it kind of thing. You're gonna get your comeuppance. Yeah.

[00:08:48]Monte WolvertonIt's a wrong fight.

[00:08:49]Daryl CagleAll right, Joe, so here you got a guy

[00:08:51]Daryl Cagleputting in all kinds of yard signs that say, I still support

[00:08:54]Daryl CagleTrump and you got a couple walking by and fella says he's going to run out of yard before Trump runs out of scandals.

[00:09:01]Daryl CagleYou've got, uh, uh, people driving away in their car with the license plate. This is first state to ban Tik TOK, help Montana. And, uh, the kids in the back seat

[00:09:11]Daryl Caglesay, mom, I'm so bored.

[00:09:14]Daryl CagleYeah, me too. I'm really bored. There's nothing to do.

[00:09:17]Daryl CagleExcellent cartoon.

[00:09:19]Joe HellerI like your voices. This cartoon must have done really well, right? Is that a Montana voice? I, you know, I got a few papers in Montana, some of the bigger ones, and they... We're wishy washy about that for some reason. I don't know. I don't know why, but it doesn't go through the summer.

[00:09:35]Joe HellerThis will be a popular

[00:09:37]Monte Wolvertonwishy washy out of their wishy washiness manifest itself.

[00:09:40]Joe HellerWell, it's just like I got a couple that said, uh, this is funny, but I'm not going to run it. Uh, that kind of stuff. And I think they're more, like you said, they're more braver online. A couple of them said, I'm not going to print it, but I'm put it online.

[00:09:52]Joe HellerYou know, it's. I don't know if you've got a spine, a bigger spine, with your online entity or publication.

[00:10:00]Chris WeyantYou know, maybe it was just that they anticipated it

[00:10:03]Daryl Caglewould generate a bunch of mail. Rather than making people angry, just didn't want to deal with mail.

[00:10:09]Chris WeyantMail's a good thing. That means that people are reading Yeah, free monitoring,

[00:10:14]Joe Hellerbut I liked it

[00:10:16]Daryl CagleEd,

[00:10:16]Daryl Caglewe're up to you. You've got your crazy republican Matt Gates And he's with his little Underage, uh sex partner, and he says she's 21. And what's so funny about this is her face is pixelated out. I think that's hilarious.

[00:10:31]Chris WeyantYeah, that's a great touch. It's really...

[00:10:34]Monte WolvertonIt's just an excellent .

[00:10:35]Joe HellerIt's a nice touch, yeah.

[00:10:36]Monte WolvertonReally is good.

[00:10:38]Ed WexlerThank you. She's got the little, uh, brightly colored lollipop, and the school books, and pigtails, and she's 21.

[00:10:46]Daryl CagleIt's fascinating how, tolerant the Republicans are of this stuff.

[00:10:51]Ed WexlerUh, yeah. I don't know. Why do you think? Why does he get away with this?

[00:10:55]Monte WolvertonWell, maybe she's not planning on having an abortion.

[00:10:58]Monte WolvertonSo it's okay.

[00:10:59]Chris WeyantRight.

[00:10:59]Daryl CagleAnyway, that's a beautiful drawing. You're a very funny caricature.

[00:11:03]Chris WeyantIt's got a big square head.

[00:11:04]Daryl Caglehere you got, three MAGA elephant ladies counting the votes in Arizona. And the first one says,

[00:11:11]Chris Weyantwe'll just keep recounting votes.

[00:11:13]Daryl CagleAnd the third one

[00:11:14]Chris Weyantsays, until it comes

[00:11:16]Ed Wexlerout, right.

[00:11:17]Chris Weyantthat's a very true cartoon.

[00:11:19]Chris WeyantAll you have to do is draw truth.

[00:11:21]Ed WexlerYeah, I, I, I liked, for a while there, I liked, uh, depicting, MAGA ladies as, uh, blonde elephants.

[00:11:27]Chris WeyantYou get the haircuts really right.

[00:11:30]Daryl CagleOh, and I thought this was very funny. You've got, uh, DeSantis Tinkerbell flying over the rainbow singing, uh, Bibbidi Bobbidi LGTBQ.

[00:11:39]Joe HellerGreat caricature.

[00:11:44]Ed WexlerI'm still struggling trying to get a handle on uh, on drawing DeSantis.

[00:11:48]Daryl CagleOh, wonderful DeSantis. I think you've got the handle.

[00:11:53]Ed WexlerHe's got like a bulby nose, but he doesn't have a big nose, you know?

[00:11:57]Daryl CagleThe DeSantis logo is funny. Drawn like Disney. a hilarious cartoon.

[00:12:02]Ed WexlerThanks, guys.

[00:12:04]Daryl CagleAnd here you've got the, elephant, painting himself into the... corner painting out his law and order, but, wanting to defund the FBI in his black defund the FBI paint. He says, we're the law and

[00:12:18]Daryl Cagleorder party, except when it comes to Trump.

[00:12:22]Ed WexlerYou know, that actually could have been Trump and not an elephant. But I thought it, I thought the cartoon would be printed in more publications if it was an elephant.

[00:12:32]Monte WolvertonYeah.

[00:12:32]Daryl CagleIt's true. You draw Trump and it just doesn't get printed. And

[00:12:35]Ed Wexlerthis is all about deflecting, away from Trump and his crimes.

[00:12:38]Chris WeyantRight.

[00:12:39]Ed WexlerAll of his stuff.

[00:12:41]Daryl CagleLovely cartoon. And here you have the Republican, couple sitting on the couch and, the wife and their ashtrays are full and smoking and they're both smoking. The wife, has her curlers and she's funny as can be. And she says,

[00:12:57]Daryl CagleSo he's a staunch anti abortion candidate who's paid for his

[00:13:01]Daryl Caglegirlfriend's abortions and denies four of his kids.

[00:13:06]Daryl CagleAnd the husband says, Nobody's perfect.

[00:13:10]Ed WexlerThat, that was, during the time of, uh, Herschel Walker. And, you know, the Republicans blind, defense. Of everything about him with, all the abortions that he's paid for and all the hypocrisy, all the Hershel Walker

[00:13:21]Chris Weyanthypocrisy.

[00:13:22]Chris WeyantThat's

[00:13:22]Chris Weyanttheir, ongoing theme of

[00:13:24]Daryl Caglenot caring about

[00:13:25]Chris Weyantany moral turpitude.

[00:13:27]Daryl CagleOh, and here's another beautiful DeSantis cartoon. you have Mickey's arm. All you need is Mickey's arm. And, he's, swishing around the dictator detector and it's beep, beep, beeping off of him like a metal detector.

[00:13:41]Ed WexlerI try to, capture DeSantis', Athletic physique.

[00:13:51]Chris WeyantHis five o'clock shadow

[00:13:52]Daryl Cagleand his upper lip, I think, are just very funny.

[00:13:55]Chris WeyantYeah, he's completely sculptural as a human being.

[00:13:59]Ed WexlerHe's sculptural.

[00:14:00]Daryl CagleEd, this is a lovely cartoon. You've got Trump with his tiny hands in handcuffs. This is the day that he was, brought in for his arraignment. lovely, simple, very cute cartoon.

[00:14:11]Monte WolvertonThat's great. It's one of those you look at and you think, why didn't I think of that? It's so, but nobody else has done that.

[00:14:17]Ed WexlerNice when that happens every, every now and again.

[00:14:19]Daryl CagleWell, lovely cartoon, Ed.

[00:14:21]Ed WexlerWell, thank you.

[00:14:22]Daryl CagleEd, this is a lovely cartoon. You've got the three conservative justices, carrying the, the coffin of ethics with Ginny Thomas on the top wearing her QAnon crazy hat with a big smile. Wonderful caricatures.

[00:14:38]Chris WeyantYeah, the

[00:14:38]Chris WeyantGinny Thomas is perfect.

[00:14:40]Monte WolvertonPerfect Ginny, yeah.

[00:14:41]Chris WeyantIt's so

[00:14:42]Monte Wolvertonfunny. I

[00:14:42]Ed Wexlermust say I enjoyed drawing that Ginny Thomas. Clearly.

[00:14:45]Monte WolvertonYeah.

[00:14:46]Chris WeyantHe comes through.

[00:14:48]Daryl CagleYou know, we did a podcast, uh, with the theme of Clarence Thomas. That was our most popular one so far.

[00:14:55]Chris WeyantThat's quite good. And Chris, you popped up here where I didn't expect

[00:14:59]Daryl Cagleyou to be.

[00:15:00]Chris WeyantSo we got, the Democrat donkey and the Republican elephant,

[00:15:04]Daryl Caglethey're each holding signs and the donkey has a sign that says, are you better off today than you were 40 years ago? And the Republican has, are you better off today than you were four years ago? that makes a good point for, one of our recent elections, I don't recall which are 2012.

[00:15:19]Daryl Cagle12. Ha, ha, ha. I'll edit this one

[00:15:20]Chris Weyantout if you want. But I think it's great! Excellent cartoon. Still good 11 years later. It's a funny drawing. It's great.

[00:15:29]Daryl CagleHere's another one that I thought I took out. Um,

[00:15:36]Chris WeyantThe elephant and the donkey each chained

[00:15:38]Daryl Cagletogether with entitlements when their axe is about to whack either the chain or their own hands off. Each saying, you first. That's an excellent graphic. I like this one. That one's probably 12 years old, too.

[00:15:52]Chris WeyantYeah, I think you're old.

[00:15:53]Daryl CagleI put in a few of mine. Um, We've got, uh, Donkey and the Elephant chasing after money, and, uh, You know, the pig represents business and greed, and he's sitting in a rickshaw getting pulled by the Donkey and the Elephant.

[00:16:08]Daryl CagleHere's, uh, Trump and his spineless Republicans as he pulls out their spine. Uh, here's, uh, GOP

[00:16:18]Chris WeyantGuernica. Don't, don't go so fast. Yeah, go ahead.

[00:16:21]Daryl CagleI'm just going through my own faster. They, uh, you know, I've seen a whole lot of cartoonists do a whole lot of Guernica cartoons, and they're always good and they're always popular, and editors just seem to love art masterpiece metaphors in cartoons.

[00:16:36]Chris WeyantDid you draw this to scale like the Real Guernica?

[00:16:38]Daryl CagleOh yeah, it fills my house.

[00:16:42]Daryl CagleUh, here's

[00:16:44]Daryl Caglea Republican inviting the folks into the house to vote where they just fall off a cliff.

[00:16:53]Ed WexlerThat's a very good one.

[00:16:54]Daryl CagleIt's a strategy.

[00:16:55]Monte WolvertonOh, you did, you did it vertical. Vertical format, which is unusual.

[00:17:00]Chris Weyantvertical format gets

[00:17:01]Daryl Cagleprinted less, but sometimes you want to do

[00:17:03]Chris Weyantit anyway.

[00:17:04]Chris WeyantYeah.

[00:17:05]Daryl CagleOkay, here's a math cartoon. Elementary school math. The gun plus the Republicans in love with the NRA equals all the dead people in the graveyard. Another cartoon I'm sure didn't get pretty much.

[00:17:18]Ed WexlerThat's a nice

[00:17:19]Ed Wexlercaricature.

[00:17:20]Chris WeyantIt is.

[00:17:21]Daryl CagleAnd here's the Republican elephant all tied up in a knot. Which seems to be their natural position.

[00:17:26]Daryl CagleOkay, we're up to you,

[00:17:27]Daryl CagleMonty.

[00:17:28]Monte WolvertonWell, there it is. This, this goes back a ways, doesn't it?

[00:17:32]Daryl CagleUh, yeah. So we got a couple, Elephants talk to each other, stacks of paper, and one of them says, I love the smell of election audits in the morning. They do love, they do love to audit when they don't win. defunding public education, Elephants says to the others.

[00:17:48]Daryl CagleAnd when our plan is complete, only the wealthy will be able to afford education. Finally, the

[00:17:53]Daryl Cagleriffraff will be under our control.

[00:17:55]Daryl Cagle

[00:17:55]Daryl CagleOh, the GOP, and science. Science says

[00:17:58]Chris Weyantgood news. We're adding years to your lifespan.

[00:18:01]Daryl CagleAnd the GOP says good news. We're saving money

[00:18:05]Chris Weyantby cutting Medicare and social security,

[00:18:07]Daryl Caglethereby taking years from your lifespan.

[00:18:09]Monte WolvertonFor some reason, my GOP guy, who looks like a generalized GOP guy in Congress or something, turned out looking like, Data.

[00:18:18]Joe HellerA little. There is a little data in there. A little Brent Spiner.

[00:18:23]Monte WolvertonYeah, Brent Spiner, yeah. I don't know why, I just noticed that afterwards. It would be much kinder, I think.

[00:18:29]Chris WeyantI noticed

[00:18:29]Daryl Caglealso you Republicans tend to have weak chins.

[00:18:32]Monte WolvertonYeah, they do. Well, like DeSantis, look at DeSantis. Okay. Or at least Wexler's DeSantis.

[00:18:37]Ed WexlerHe's got much, he's not got much chin.

[00:18:39]Ed WexlerAlright, so here your Republican says, And we won't stop until every American man, woman, and child is equipped with their very own

[00:18:46]Daryl CagleAR 15. White, straight Republicans, that is.

[00:18:50]Monte WolvertonYeah, you can't trust the other people. Can't trust the other people with AR 15s. We'll give them squirt guns.

[00:18:56]Chris WeyantHere's

[00:18:56]Daryl Cagleyour DeSantis, Monty. Uh, dressed like he's, a king knight from the Middle Ages. And he says, At

[00:19:03]Daryl Caglelast, my reversion of Florida to the Dark Ages is

[00:19:07]Daryl Caglecomplete. And now for the rest of the country. And behind him they're saying, Bring out your dead.

[00:19:13]Chris WeyantYeah, a

[00:19:13]Monte Wolvertonlittle, Monty Python reference there, if you recall.

[00:19:17]Daryl CagleAnd here you've got the elephant in the nest with, Elon Musk. I guess they're in bed together. Twits of a feather. Elon says, make yourself at home. The twitter nests.

[00:19:28]Monte WolvertonThis is, actually the week after he screwed up the, the big release of the DeSantis campaign, and yet he is, he's GOP friendly.

[00:19:37]Monte Wolvertonit's increasingly becoming the haunt of

[00:19:40]Chris WeyantGOP. Yeah,

[00:19:40]Joe Helleryou captured his, like, his creepiness.

[00:19:42]Ed Wexlercan totally tell it's him.

[00:19:44]Monte WolvertonHe's creepy. Well, and there's the, there's the trademark there, and he hasn't said anything about it to me so far.

[00:19:51]Ed WexlerYou wonder if they see him, you know,

[00:19:52]Chris Weyantdoes the elephant have a

[00:19:53]Chris Weyantbelly button?

[00:19:54]Daryl CagleHe has quite an interesting belly button. It's

[00:19:57]Monte Wolvertoneither a belly button or a, or a spider.

[00:20:00]Chris WeyantI like it.

[00:20:00]Daryl CagleOkay, gentlemen, we've gotten through our, 35 cartoons and they were an excellent 35 cartoons.

[00:20:07]Daryl CagleSo you guys have any more comments on Crazy Republicans?

[00:20:10]Chris WeyantWhat's to say? They're crazy.

[00:20:11]Joe HellerIt's like shooting fish in a barrel once in a while.

[00:20:13]Daryl CagleI guess it is.

[00:20:15]Monte WolvertonWell, my next one will have bloods and guns in it, so... It probably won't see much publication, but maybe it will.

[00:20:20]Chris WeyantI don't know about you guys. I'm more than happy

[00:20:23]Chris Weyantto draw about independents and democrats if they

[00:20:25]Chris Weyantjust, you know,

[00:20:26]Chris Weyantif the GOP would stop hogging the attention

[00:20:30]Chris Weyantwith

[00:20:30]Chris Weyantinsanity.

[00:20:30]Chris WeyantIf they just did something else, maybe govern, then I'll be bored.

[00:20:35]Monte WolvertonIt's such an easy target, as it were.

[00:20:37]Joe HellerUh, this is, we gotta start watching the right news channels. That way, uh, you know, we can start drawing those fake cartoons.

[00:20:44]Chris WeyantRight.

[00:20:44]Daryl CagleBut... You make an excellent point. So, everybody, thank you for,
